Trumps defends his sharing of terror intelligence with Russia

President Donald Trump has defended sharing intelligence with Russia following a bipartisan outcry over reports that he revealed highly sensitive information about a terrorist bomb plot to the Russian foreign minister during a White House meeting.
Mr Trump appeared to confirm yesterday that he revealed details related to Isis activity with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in a meeting last week.
“I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining . . . to terrorism and airline flight safety. Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism,” Mr Trump tweeted.
The White House has refused to clarify whether the information was classified. Lieutenant General HR McMaster, White House national security adviser, yesterday denied a report in the Washington Post that Mr Trump had jeopardised the nation’s security by inappropriately sharing information with Russia, which is not a US ally.
Lt-Gen McMaster said it was “wholly appropriate” for the president to have revealed the information and stressed that Mr Trump “in no way compromised sources or methods”.
Democrats and some top Republicans have raised serious questions about the move. While the president has the ability to declassify most sensitive information, experts worry that his apparent casual relationship with top secret information will make foreign spy agencies less willing to share critical intelligence with the US.
“The reports that the president shared sensitive intelligence with Russian officials are deeply disturbing,” said John McCain, the Arizona Republican senator. “Reports that this information was provided by a US ally and shared without its knowledge sends a troubling signal to America’s allies and partners.”
The latest scandal to hit the White House comes just days after Mr Trump sparked criticism by firing James Comey, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI has been investigating links between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian officials.
Mr Trump in January fired Michael Flynn, his first national security adviser, after he had lied to top officials about conversations he held with Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, who joined Mr Lavrov for the meeting with Mr Trump last week.
The Washington Post reported that Mr Trump had breached the trust of an unnamed ally that had relayed information about an Isis plot to target airliners using laptop bombs, and that he shared the details, including the city where the plot was uncovered, with Mr Lavrov. It said the details were so sensitive that they had not been shared with US allies and circulation was tightly restricted within government.
After the Washington Post first published its account, Lt-Gen McMaster said the story “as reported, is false”. Yesterday, he stressed that Mr Trump was not even aware of the sources and methods and had not jeopardised US security.
Bob Corker, Republican chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, said the Trump administration was “in a downward spiral right now” and that the White House “has got to do something soon to bring itself under control and order”.
