Donald Trump asked FBI chief to halt Flynn investigation

Donald Trump asked FBI director James Comey to halt the investigation into Michael Flynn, the former National Security Adviser, at a private Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo that the law enforcement official wrote at the time.
Mr Comey shared the memo, part of an extensive effort to document his interactions with the president, with senior FBI officials, according to an associate who confirmed the existence of the memo and several quotes contained therein.
“I hope you can let this go,” the president told Mr Comey, in a reference to the investigation of Mr Flynn, the memo says.
The president reluctantly fired Mr Flynn in February after only 24 days on the job, following disclosures that the former general had misled Mike Pence, the vice-president, about his conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the US. He met Mr Comey on February 14, one day after sacking Mr Flynn.
On Capitol Hill, most Republicans hunkered down amid the latest bombshell to rock Mr Trump’s young presidency. Democrats escalated their attacks on the president, whose administration is reeling from near-daily damaging disclosures.
“If true, this is yet another disturbing allegation that the president may have engaged in some interference or obstruction of the investigation,” said Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. “Enough is enough. Congress really needs to get to the bottom of this.”
The memo’s existence, first reported by The New York Times, is certain to increase pressure for Mr Comey to testify on Capitol Hill. The former director declined an invitation by the Senate intelligence committee to appear on Tuesday at a closed session but is expected eventually to appear before lawmakers in a public hearing.
Senator Angus King, an independent member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, acknowledged in an interview on CNN that the Comey memo raised the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Mr Trump.
The House of Representatives charged both Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton with obstruction of justice in impeachment proceedings.
