Top Republican likens Trump White House to ‘adult day care centre’

A top Republican senator has launched an extraordinary public attack on Donald Trump, claiming the White House was running an “adult day care centre” and that the president’s behaviour could lead the country into the third world war.
Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, was responding to a Twitter barrage from the president in which he accused the Tennessee Republican, who has announced he will not seek re-election next year, of lacking the “guts” to run again.
Mr Corker’s words, which came in tweets and an interview with the New York Times on Sunday, mark the most vituperative attack by a leading Republican lawmaker on the president, lifting the lid on the tense relations between the White House and senior party figures.
The bitter turn in Mr Corker’s relations with Mr Trump will present a new threat to the president’s agenda, given the Republicans enjoy a paper-thin lead in the Senate and are trying to push through measures including an ambitious tax-reform package without Democratic support.
While Mr Corker was an early backer of Mr Trump and was briefly considered as a possible running mate, he has become increasingly outspoken in his criticism of the president. Mr Corker’s decision not to seek another term in 2018 appears to have further loosened his inhibitions.
Speaking to the New York Times, Mr Corker said the president was treating his office like a reality TV show with threats to other countries that could propel the US “on the path to World War III”.
“He concerns me,” the Tennessee lawmaker said, adding that senior administration officials were being forced to contain him at the White House and that his concerns about Mr Trump were shared widely in the party. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”
Earlier, Mr Corker said on Twitter that it was a “shame that the White House has become an adult day care centre”, and that “someone obviously missed their shift this morning”.
This was a response to claims by Mr Trump that Mr Corker had begged him for an endorsement and decided not to seek another term after failing to receive it.
“I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda,” Mr Trump tweeted. “Didn’t have the guts to run.”
Mr Corker later denied this account in the interview, saying Mr Trump had urged him to run again and offered his backing.
