A Turkish court has convicted a Wall Street Journal reporter of engaging in terrorist propaganda and sentenced her to two years and one month in prison.
The conviction of Ayla Albayrak, who is now in the US, comes amid a crackdown on journalists by the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Ms Albayrak and the newspaper plan to appeal the decision in the case, which stemmed from a 2015 article she wrote about a conflict between Turkish security forces and Kurdish separatists in southeastern Turkey. Following the article’s publication she was told she was being investigated for spreading terrorist propaganda and was later indicted for violating Turkish antiterror law.
“This was an unfounded criminal charge and wildly inappropriate conviction that wrongly singled out a balanced Wall Street Journal report,” said Gerry Baker, the newspaper’s editor in chief, in a statement. In an email to staff, he described Ms Albayrak as “the victim of a gross injustice” and vowed that the newspaper would “continue to defend Ayla with everything we have at our disposal.”
“This ruling against a professional and respected journalist is an affront to all who are committed to furthering a free and robust press,” said Will Lewis, chief executive of Dow Jones, the Journal’s owner.
Turkey is in the second year of a state of emergency that followed an aborted coup attempt in July 2016. As part of the government’s crackdown, the country passed China to become the world’s largest jailer of journalists last year, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. In December, Dion Nissenbaum, a Journal reporter then in Istanbul, was detailed by Turkish police for three days.
The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the conviction. CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said:
We call on Turkish authorities not to contest Ayla Albayrak’s appeal and to drop all charges against her. Dozens of journalists are imprisoned for their work in Turkey and this conviction is a signal that conditions for the press are continuing to deteriorate. Rather than dispensing justice, Turkey’s judicial system has become an instrument of persecution.
