Democrats debate need for own celebrities in age of Trump

Democrats desperate to trounce Donald Trump are asking if it is time to fight the former reality TV frontman by drawing on some star power of their own.
Oprah Winfrey electrified a ballroom full of celebrities at the Golden Globes on Sunday night with a call for justice for women in a culture “broken by brutally powerful men”, triggering speculation that she is contemplating a presidential run in 2020.
The potency of Ms Winfrey’s appeal is unquestioned: a self-made media and business billionaire, she has enormous cultural clout while lacking the political baggage that dogged the likes of Hillary Clinton. In the era of Trump, where media savvy and an outsider’s status have proved more valuable than detailed understanding of policy or governance, some analysts argue that she could be a serious contender.
Ms Winfrey is one of a number of high-wattage names touted as possible candidates for high office — among them Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook
chief executive, Howard Schultz, the former Starbucks
chief, and even actor George Clooney.
But the notion that the Democrats should turn to a political neophyte with an unclear policy platform to battle Mr Trump concerns strategists wary of promoting those with no political experience to high office. Some fear the speculation over celebrities’ intentions will suck the oxygen out of the party’s unresolved policy debates and cripple the chances of Democrats with strong governing backgrounds.
“My fear here is that we are being seduced by celebrity,” said Rebecca Katz, a Democratic strategist and partner at Hilltop Public Solutions. “If Oprah does run, it will be very hard for any other Democrat to get any kind of attention.”        2017年当扎克伯格作出拜访和会见各州人民的新年计划时,加剧了关于他可能竞选总统的传言。
Mr Trump’s stunning success in November 2016 encouraged the view that traditional political credentials are no longer a major electoral asset.
Mr Zuckerberg fuelled rumours of presidential ambitions in 2017 when he made it his New Year’s resolution to visit and meet people from every state. But this year he has set himself the challenge of fixing “important issues” at the social network, suggesting his immediate priority is not politics.
Mr Schultz, who stepped down as chief executive of Starbucks last year, endorsed Mrs Clinton in 2016 but said of his own political future: “I would never say never.”
In Hollywood, Mr Clooney is often mentioned as a possible contender, although the actor has dismissed notions that he has political aspirations, telling Variety: “I think that having a celebrity as president who has a star on Hollywood Boulevard [referring to Mr Trump] will exorcise our need to have someone famous in office.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the action star of the Fast and Furious series, has said he is “seriously considering” a run for president, although it is not clear which party’s nomination he would seek.
Jeremy Rosner, a political consultant at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, said Mr Trump’s election victory had tilted the political ground towards people who understood the media environment.
Opposition to his policies had triggered a surge of individuals without political backgrounds putting themselves forward for public office in acts of “civic idealism”, he said. (Kirsten Gillibrand)
But Mr Rosner stressed that politics was “a hard arena” and that many outside that world underestimated the skills involved — among them surviving the debates, working through the gruelling presidential primaries, hiring staff and building coalitions.
Among senior politicians in the frame are well known senators, including Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusett, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.
Away from the Senate, speculation continues to swirl around former vice-president Joe Biden, who has said he regrets not running for president, as well as Deval Patrick, the former Massachusetts governor, and John Hickenlooper, the current Colorado governor.
Rachel Kleinfeld, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said the party needed to narrow the playing field and to bolster the name recognition of experienced office holders, rather than turning to celebrity saviours. The Democratic Party, she argued, was currently “having tremendous difficulty uniting behind anyone”.
