At least 19 people were killed in Hong Kong after a double-decker bus overturned, in the former British colony’s deadliest bus crash in almost 15 years.
Authorities said the bus was travelling from Sha Tin racecourse to Tai Po in the Chinese special administrative region’s New Territories when it overturned on a corner.
The fatal crash, which occurred at 6.15pm on Saturday following the day’s races at the Sha Tin track, killed 15 men and four women, and injured more than 60 others.
Police suspect the driver of speeding while driving down a slope, causing him to lose control of the bus.
“He was grumpy because some people criticised him for being late. He then started to drive the bus like he was flying a plane,” a passenger told local media of the bus driver.
The driver, aged 30, has been charged with dangerous driving causing injury and dangerous driving causing death. Authorities said that the driver had not been under the influence of alcohol while driving and did not require medical treatment after the crash.
Photos and videos posted on social media show emergency workers cutting injured passengers free from the crashed bus and treating several of them on-site.
The bus crash was Hong Kong’s deadliest since 2003, when 21 people died after a double-decker plunged off a flyover after colliding with a truck.
In 2008 a bus lost control on a roundabout in Sai Kung, killing 18 and injuring more than 40. Last year three people died and almost 30 were injured when a double-decker bus mounted a pavement and hit several pedestrians during rush hour.
Carrie Lam, the territory’s chief executive who visited some of the injured in hospital on Saturday, said the government would establish a committee to probe Hong Kong’s bus safety.
A bus union representative blamed the crash on long working hours and a shortage of drivers.
Most of Hong Kong's bus drivers work overtime to supplement their roughly $1,800 per month salary, according to a 2016 survey.
The poll, conducted by a Hong Kong union, showed that more than three-quarters of the city’s bus drivers worked 50-60 hours per week, and that many drove after having had little sleep.
